Watch: Italian outrage as tourist carves a love message on the Colosseum walls

A young man has been filmed caught carving a love message onto the wall of Rome’s Colosseum.

The video was posted online – causes uproar in Italy.

The holidaymaker uses a set of keys to scratch “Ivan + Hayley 23” in full view of tourists.

A bystander caught the moment.

Although he knew he was being filmed the man – joined by a woman – carried on carving away despite someone saying:

“Are you f—–g serious, man?

That is f—-d-up, man.

Stupid a—–e.”

The video, which was captioned:

“A—–e tourist carves name in Colosseum in Rome.”

One user wrote in response: “People like this should have their passports revoked.”

Another commented: “They got his face, so hopefully he’s arrested and charged.”

Italy’s carabinieri said it was investigating the matter.

Gennaro Sangiuliano, the Italian culture minister, said:

“I consider it very serious, unworthy and a sign of great incivility that a tourist defaces one of most famous places in the world, a historical heritage such as the Colosseum, to carve the name of his fiancée.”

If caught, the man risks a fine of up to €15,000 and being jailed for up to five years.

Other tourists who have been arrested in the past for similar misbehaviour were given huge penalties.

In 2014, a Russian tourist who carved his initials onto the Colosseum was handed a four-month suspended sentence and fined €20,000.
