Former TV actor left with road tarmac stuck to his hand after climate change protest

A climate change activist was left with a slab of tarmac glued to his hand after a protest.

Raul Semmler, 38, mixed sand and glue together to stick his right hand to a road in Mainze, southern Germany.

The former crime drama actor has now been jailed for three days.

The court heard the police were unable to remove the tarmac with solvents.

They used a jackhammer to cut around his fingers.

Semmler said at the time:

“Of course, it was scary when the police turned up with a big angle grinder to cut up the asphalt, but I honestly am more scared that we don’t have a secure future.”

Semmler has been arrested at street blockades on at least 100 occasions, reports the German newspaper Bild.

He was sentenced by a court in the northern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on Tuesday.

Semmler will serve extra time in prison because he can’t pay outstanding fines accumulated for his repeated law-breaking.

The Letzte Generation protest group said:

“Raul faces longer in prison because he courageously stood up for our livelihoods.

“He is now expected to spend a total of over three weeks in jail.”

Semmler was actor on German television.

He starred in evening crime dramas such as the East German series Polizeiruf.
