| On 29 January, the Joint Action on REspiratory Diseases (JARED) will hold its kick-off meeting. JARED is a three-year collaboration between 14 member states, Iceland, Ukraine and Moldova, led by Hungary. Backed with almost EUR 5 million from the EU4Health programme, this key initiative will focus on tackling chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs).JARED aims to improve lung health across Europe, by facilitating a strong EU-added value through collaborative work between the member states, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups. This will be achieved by combining innovative digital health technologies, improved access to diagnostic tools and enhanced health literacy efforts.JARED is part of the ‘Healthier Together’ – EU non-communicable diseases initiative. This initiative supports the development capacities of participant countries in effectively addressing and managing the burden of CRDs and highlights lung health as an important public health challenge. JARED’s main actions include:strengthening the prevention of the onset and progression of CRDs, particularly of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD);facilitating relevant vaccination programmes;scaling up the early detection of CRDs; and improving self-management for people living with CRDs. JARED is the first collaborative work (‘joint action’) between member states in the area of chronic respiratory disorders. It represents a strong commitment from countries to develop and implement preventive efforts in all key elements of respiratory health. It builds on the work of related joint actions, such as PreventNCD and the upcoming joint action on health promotion and disease prevention including smoke-and-aerosol free environments, under the EU4Health work programme for 2024.
