The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), affiliated to the European People’s Party (EPP), agreed to form a government together with the far-right Homeland Movement. The European Greens, together with their Croatian member party Možemo, have expressed their grave concerns at this move.
Gordan Bosanac, leader of the European Parliament list of Možemo said: “Radical right-wing forces are to become an integral part of the new political majority in Croatia. This is bad news for minorities and women due to their anti-democratic and regressive stance. It is also bad news for workers, farmers, and many others due to a likely new wave of privatisation of public resources. Možemo will be a strong opposition in the parliament, unconditionally protecting all vulnerable groups who may come under the attack of extremists. We will defend democracy, human rights, and social justice in Croatia!”. Možemo (We can!) is a member party of the European Green Party since February 2024.
European Green top candidate Terry Reintke: “This week’s Europe Day celebrated the victory over fascism. The European Greens insist that all political parties, including those belonging to the European People’s Party, refrain from collaborating with the far-right. The far-right is a threat to human rights and democracy and seeks to undermine European democracy”.
European Green top candidate Bas Eickhout: “This week, the leaders of the Greens, Socialists, Liberals, and the Left in the European Parliament issued a joint declaration calling for a united rejection of any collaboration with far-right and radical parties. The group of the European People’s Party refused to sign the declaration. This refusal raises concerns about the strength of commitment across the political spectrum to defend Europe’s core values of freedom and democracy.”
Thursday, the European Green Party launched its video that shows how today’s far-right rhetoric and actions recall history’s darkest chapters.
