More than 700 kgs of cocaine found on ship heading for Canary Islands staging post

A cocaine smuggling gang has been busted after a suspicious ship was stopped in the Atlantic.

More than 700 kgs of the Class A drug were uncovered.

The Polish registered ship was allegedly plying its trade between South America and Europe via the Canary Islands.

The investigation focused on the vessel and its established temporary base on the islands.

Law officers from three countries checked the activities of the crew.

Spanish authorities boarded the vessel at sea and held several suspects.

One of the individuals, an Italian national, was linked to the Italian ´Ndrangheta’.

Another, a Croatian national, was linked to the so-called Balkan Cartel.

“Although they had no professional activity, both were enjoying high living standards while maintaining the vessel in excellent condition”, said a Europol spokesperson
