NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg is to stay on for an extra year as war in Ukraine continues.
Mr Stoltenberg – a former Norwegian Prime Minister – was due to stand down.
However, the security alliance’s 31 members cannot agree on a new leader.
It’s reported the extension for Mr Stoltenberg gives NATO continuity at a much-needed time.
In a tweet Mr Stoltenberg said he was honoured by Tuesday’s decision to extend his term to Oct 1, 2024.
“The transatlantic bond between Europe and North America has ensured our freedom and security for nearly 75 years, and in a more dangerous world, our alliance is more important than ever.”
The 64-year-old had already lined up a job as head of the central bank in his native Norway when the invasion of Ukraine pushed allies to ask him to stay on last year.
