The grandmother of the French teenager shot dead by the police appealed for calm on the streets.
She urged rioters to stop battling the police, wrecking cars, and looting shops.
The grandmother – identified only as Nadia – said:
“Don’t break windows, buses … schools.
“We want to calm things down.”
“I’m telling them to stop.”
“Nahel is dead.
“My daughter is lost … she doesn’t have a life anymore.”
Nadia’s grandson Nahel was shot dead during a “routine” stop by the police.
She told broadcaster BFM TV that she was angry at the officer who killed her grandson but not at the police overall.
She said she had “faith” in the French judicial system.
The violence throughout France appears to have quietened over the weekend.
Arrests have dropped nearly 90 per cent.
Overall, more than 3,000 people have been detained and hundreds of police and firefighters have been injured in the violence.
Authorities have not revealed how many protesters have been wounded.
