Russian General Sergei Goryachev is the country’s highest-ranking officer to die this year in the invasion of Ukraine.
He was killed in a missile strike in the Zaporizhzhia region.
It’s reported he died in an “enemy rocket attack” during heavy fighting on the southern front late on Monday night.
Russian military blogger Yuri Kotenok described the General as “one of the brightest and most effective commanders.”
He added: “He combined the highest professionalism with personal courage.”
Russia’s defence ministry is yet to confirm the death.
However, Kremlin-aligned media have reported his demise.
General Goryachev commanded troops in Transnistria and Tajikistan as he rose through the ranks.
The popular Russian Telegram channel posted:
“Eternal memory to the hero.”
Ukraine’s military claimed responsibility, stating the general “was eliminated as a result of the successful actions of the Ukrainian Army”.
