Former footballer Graeme Souness helps raise £1 million for charity after gruelling 21-mile cross-Channel swim

Former footballer Graeme Souness – now aged 70 – has swim the 21 miles across the English Channel to raise money for charity.

Souness – a former Liverpool FC and Scotland captain – has raised more than £1 million for Debra UK.

The charity helps people who suffer from epidermolysis bullosa (EB) – a rare condition that causes painful, blistering skin.

He was inspired to swim the sea for his friend Isla Grist, 14, who suffers from the illness.

Souness was joined by Isla’s father Andy, and four other swimmers.

Souness said: “From the time I have spent with Isla and her family, I have seen first-hand the extreme pain this devastating condition causes and the daily challenges it creates.

“I wanted to do something that could make a difference to Isla’s life and to the lives of so many others living with EB, and the slightly crazy idea of swimming the English Channel was suggested.”

Souness – a renowned hardman during his footballing days – said he was not “one to walk away from a challenge”.
