Beleaguered PM Rishi Sunak will take “whatever steps necessary to restore integrity back into politics”.
His determination was aired after the sacking of Conservative Party Chairman Nadhir Zahawi.
Mr Zahawi was dismissed after an inquiry ruled he’d broken more than half a dozen ministerial codes over his “complex” tax returns.
He claimed he’d been fined more than £1.4 million for an “innocent error”.
However, HMRC CEO Jim Harra told a Commons Committee the HMRC did not impose penalties for “innocent errors”.
Mr Sunak said: “The things that happened before I was Prime Minister I can’t do anything about.
“What you can hold me to account for is how I deal with the things that arise on my watch.
“When it came to Nadhim Zahawi, I asked the independent adviser to look at it straight away and acted on his findings straight away.
“That should give you some confidence that these things matter to me.
“I will take whatever steps are necessary to restore the integrity back into politics and you can have confidence that the process works.”
The Prime Minister sacked Mr Zahawi from his role as Tory chairman yesterday for breaches of the ministerial code in relation to his tax affairs.
An inquiry into bullying claims against the Deputy PM Dominic Raab continues.
The Tory party has recently been dogged by accusations – and findings – of “less than expected” behaviour.
Only last week Mr Sunak was fined £100 for not wearing a seatbelt.
