Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been fined £100 for not wearing a seat belt as a passenger in a moving car.

The PM was filming a clip for his Instagram account when people spotted he was not strapped in.

Mr Sunak was on his way to the North West to talk about levelling up.

A Lancashire Constabulary statement said:

“You will be aware that a video has been circulating on social media showing an individual failing to wear a seatbelt while a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire.

“After looking into this matter, we have today issued a 42-year-old man from London with a conditional offer of fixed penalty.”

Number 10 had admitted earlier the Prime Minister had made a “”brief error of judgement” in taking off the belt to film.

The clip has now been dropped from his account.

A spokeswoman for Mr Sunak said he would pay the fine.

She added: “The Prime Minister fully accepts this was a mistake and has apologised.

“He will of course comply with the fixed penalty.”

This is the second time Mr Sunak has been issued with a fixed penalty notice.

Last year he was fined by the Metropolitan Police for a breach of lockdown restrictions.

He was caught up in the farrago following a “birthday party” for the then PM Boris Johnson in June 2020.
